BEST DATE NIGHT RESTAURANTS
Five places for a date that is not trying too hard. Edited by Eric. The rule for inclusion: it has to be quiet enough to talk, attentive enough that you do not have to flag down a server, and inexpensive enough that the night does not start with sticker shock.

01 · A16
Marina · 2355 Chestnut Street
The pizza is the move but the chicory salad is the conversation starter and the Mt. Vesuvius bianco at the bar is the after-dinner. The wine list is opinionated but the staff will steer you. Sit at the bar if you can; the back tables are loud on weekends. Reservations open at 10 a.m. the day before for the weekend, and they go fast.
02 · Lazy Bear
Mission · 3416 19th Street
A communal-table format that sounds awkward and is not. The chef talks through the menu before each course. The room is candlelit. The price is real. Save it for an actual occasion, not a Tuesday. Closed Sundays and Mondays. Reservations open 60 days out at the top of every month.
03 · Foreign Cinema
Mission · 2534 Mission Street
The conceit (movies projected on the back wall) is a gimmick that has aged well. The brunch is more famous than the dinner, which is a mistake. Sit on the patio under the heat lamps and order the oysters and the cassoulet. Reservations get hard after 7 p.m. on Friday. Wednesday at 6 is the move.
04 · State Bird Provisions
Western Addition · 1529 Fillmore Street
Dim-sum-cart format, prix-fixe-ish pricing. Loud, fast, and the menu is constructed so you can taste a lot of things without commitment. The Mongolian-style pork was on the menu the editor’s last six visits. Reservations are mandatory and open exactly 60 days out at 9 a.m.
05 · Tartine Manufactory
Mission · 595 Alabama Street
Late lunch into dinner. The bread program is the point but the small plates are real. Sit on the bench seats near the window. The hot pour-over with a fougasse is the best afternoon date in the city. They take walk-ins reliably between 2 and 5 p.m. on weekdays.
Editor’s note
A couple of well-loved restaurants did not make this list. One has gotten so loud it is harder to talk than to dance. One has slipped in execution since the chef left in 2024. Both might come back next refresh. We do not punish a restaurant permanently for one bad quarter.
