Golden Gate Bridge Spouts Mysterious Noise, Residents Complain About Integrity

1 min read

San Francisco engineers are working around the clock to discover the source of the loud humming noise that residents have been complaining about that began last year when officials added a sidewalk safety railing on the bridge’s western side.

Repair crews change about 12,000 wide slats with narrower ones to make the bridge slimmer and sturdier during powerful winds. However, while the replacement increased the bridge’s safety, it also resulted in noise when the wind blew through the new slats.

Mysterious Noise

Many residents who passed through the bridge shared videos of the noise on social media platforms. “It’s really loud. Huge and all-encompassing. It makes you worry if the bridge is coming apart,” resident Aneela Brister said.

The disturbing noise can be heard as far as Daly City, which is 10 miles south of the city. “Some people have found it to be meditative and angelic,” spokesman Paolo Cosulich-Schwartz said. However, he also acknowledged the problems that it caused many other people, Fox Business reported.

The spokesman said engineers were working on a solution to remove the noise caused by the winds through the bridge. “We’ll have more to say this summer. It’s a tricky business. We want to be absolutely sure we get it right. We will never sacrifice the structural integrity of the bridge but we want to be responsive to our neighbors,” he said.
